The Deutschordensschloss Kloppenheim is an 18th century palace in Kloppenheim , a district of Karben in the Wetterau district in Hesse .

history

At the site of today's castle in the west of the elongated village of Kloppenheim, an older castle complex or a larger, possibly fortified courtyard of the Teutonic Order is assumed. Possession of the Teutonic Order is tangible in the place Kloppenheim, first mentioned in 792, since 1269. The farm itself was first mentioned in a document in 1409.

In 1659 the order succeeded in acquiring the tithe freedom from the Burggrafschaft Friedberg , to which the place Kloppenheim with the free court Kaichen belonged. In 1719 the order was able to acquire the sovereign rights over the place in full. Almost at the same time (1718) the ownership of the order was transformed into an independent commander within the Ballei Franken . The claim to ownership found its outward expression in the construction of today's Teutonic Order Palace 1708–1718 by the Landkomtur Philipp Benedikt Forstmeister von Gelnhausen (inscription above the main portal) and the further redesign of the place.

With the abolition of the order under Napoleon , the palace fell to the Grand Duchy of Hesse in 1809 . Just two years later it was sold to the Counts of Walderdorff . In 1929 the State of Hesse acquired the castle. It has been privately owned again since the 1960s and was extensively restored in the 1980s.

The L-shaped main building fits into the south and west sides of an older square castle or fortified courtyard, from which the moats are still visible. It is a two-storey building with curved gables. The main portal with inscription is on the south side. The two opposite sides consist of single-storey outbuildings.
