Konradsdorf Castle

The castle Konradsdorf is no later than 1000 built small hillside castle ( tower castle ) in Konradsdorf above the river Nidder southwest of Ortenberg in Hessen Wetteraukreis . It was abandoned in the second half of the 12th century. The Konradsdorf Monastery, first documented in 1191, was built in its place and partly on its remains .

description

During excavations in 1994–1996, remains of the Salian castle were found under the former monastery church . The remainder of a dismantled sandstone tower was found under the north aisle , with an almost square floor plan measuring 7.60 mx 7.80 m and a wall thickness between 2.50 m and 2.70 m. The foundations of a small hall church dating from before 1000 AD were also found under the church , which was located within a cemetery in which the castle tower had also been placed. It is not known whether there was initially a settlement with a hall church and then an extension with the castle complex, or whether the church and castle were built at the same time.

The castle probably lost its importance in the second half of the 12th century when several members of the Büdingen family built new high and low castles in the vicinity of Konradsdorf , including today's Ortenberg Castle . Around 1190, under Hartmann von Büdingen , a ministerial and close confidante of Emperor Friedrich I , the Konradsdorf monastery was built on and from the remains of the castle and the old hall church, which was to serve as the house monastery and burial place of his family.
