The castle Griedel is an Outbound castle on the site of today's Evangelical Church in Griedel ( Kleine Kirchgasse 13 ), a district of Butzbach in Wetteraukreis in Hesse .

history

The town, which has been documented since 768, was owned by the von Munzenberg lords until it died out in 1255 , after which it passed to the Falkensteiners and in 1418 to the lords of Eppstein . Towards the end of the 15th century, the place and castle had to be left to the Counts of Solms-Braunfels in the course of inheritance disputes. According to a document from the Schiffenberg monastery, a knightly von Griedel family has been traceable since around 1150 . These died out around 1466 (last documented mention).

The castle was probably built in the 14th century by foundations of the local nobility (the knights of Bellersheim and the lords of Kolnhausen ) to secure their property and was mentioned in documents in 1408 and 1464. Henne von Kolnhausen is named as the owner of the castle , who is mentioned in 1446 and 1459 as the Griedelsch bailiff of Eppstein Castle . It then served as the seat of the officials of Solms-Braunfels. The year 1551 shows the date of a building inscription in the half-timbered part above the entrance door of Griedel Castle. In 1779 the place and castle are mentioned: Belonging to the Wolfersheim office : "Griedel, a church village, where a sovereign castle and a noble estate is itself."

Known among them were the pensioners Elias Carrière (1745-1811) and Wilhelm Gottlieb Carrière (1792-1867). The castle was the birthplace of the philosopher Moriz Carrière .

The castle probably only consisted of a permanent house (stone house) next to an unconnected keep. The round keep of the castle later served as the defensive choir tower of the church to protect the citizens and probably dates from the second half of the 14th century. In 1695 the keep is shown with a pointed roof and two corner turrets . The whole thing was secured by a moat that existed until 1835, because it was filled in that year. According to the Butzbach History Association, the castle was in princely possession until 1926 and was only then sold to changing owners. There were other aristocratic and junker courts in the village.

The spire of the former donjon and today's church tower dates back to the 1830th

According to an alternative interpretation, the round tower was never a free-standing fortress tower of a castle, but was added as a choir tower to a nave from the Romanesque period in the 14th century . The uniform masonry with its Gothic tracery windows speaks against the fact that the windows were only broken into later. As a result, the tower served as a church tower from the start, but in the late medieval period it had a double function. Since the von Bellersheim and Kolnhausen in Griedel only had a stone house, but no fortified castle, they had the church tower built in a defensive manner. The four flanking guard houses of the late Gothic helmet structure were used as lookouts and for defense purposes. The entire church yard with its strong walling and its three fixed gates formed a refuge and defense.
