The Brod Fortress (Croatian Tvrđava Brod ) is a large imperial and royal frontier fortress from the Baroque era in Croatia . It was built between 1715 and 1780 on the then military border on the Save . It is located in the town of Slavonski Brod and is open to visitors as a sight.

In the 18th century, Brod was an important strategic place as a border crossing point to the Ottoman Empire and Austria-Hungary .

The Brod fortress was designed uniformly and star-shaped. Since there are no stones in the area as building material, the building was mainly made of bricks. It was designed to accommodate 4,000 soldiers and 150 cannons and covers a total of 141 acres of land.

The fortress had three lines of defense and was surrounded by moats.

In 1860 the fortress was given up as having no military significance. Only at the beginning of the 20th century was it allowed to build in the immediate vicinity.

Between 1945 and 1991 there was a barracks of the Yugoslav People's Army in the fortress .

The fortress today

This unique building is legally protected as a cultural monument and is gradually being renovated. The Ružić Gallery is located inside the fortress.
