The fortress of Bard ( Italian forte di Bard , French Fort de Bard ) is a fortress complex on a rocky hill in the river valley of the Dora Baltea west above the small village of Bard in Italy. Historical documents show the first system as early as the 6th century. In 1800 the complex was completely destroyed, the current fortress was completed in 1838. Today the fortress is home to various museums and other tourist facilities.

history

In the 6th century, at the time of Theodoric the Great , there was an Ostrogoth garrison (Clausuræ augustanæ) on the rock head . Later the place belonged to the Count of Aosta and then to the Lords of Bard. In the 13th century the fortress came into the possession of the Counts of Savoy .

In 1704, the Savoy occupation in the War of the Spanish Succession was able to thwart the advance of the French army into Piedmont.

Today's fortress was built by King Karl Albert of Sardinia-Piedmont , who came from the House of Savoy, between 1830 and 1838, after the previous building on the same site was blown up and completely destroyed at the instigation of Napoleon in 1800 . The French troops got into such great difficulties after their passage over the Great Saint Bernard in May 1800 as a result of the massive bombardment by the 400 men of the Austrian garrison of the fort and had seen their advance so delayed that Napoleon went there himself, directed the attack and ordered the demolition of the fort after the surrender of the crew on June 1, 1800.

Todays use

In January 2006 the fortress was opened to visitors after being restored after a long period of neglect. The fortress is now home to various exhibitions and museums, including the Museo delle Alpi ( Musée des Alpes in French ; "Museum of the Alps"), which provides information about the nature and settlement history of the Western Alps .

Various tourist facilities such as a hotel or café are located in the area of the fortress. In summer, theater or music performances take place in the central courtyard of the fortress.

In March 2014, several key scenes of the 2015 movie Avengers: Age of Ultron were filmed in the fortress .
