The Akodésséwa fetish market ( French marché des féticheurs , also marché aux fétiches ) is held in Akodésséwa , a suburb of Lomé in Togo , and is considered the largest voodoo market in the world.

Market offers

All kinds of utensils are on the market , e.g. B. Skulls, dried heads and skins of various animal species, offered and sold. There are incantations . The sick seek healing here and people come who hope for a magic for various occasions .

In recent years the market has also been discovered by tourism . This and the protection of species contribute to the fact that the market is changing dramatically.

Voodoo has a long tradition in Togo. Centuries ago, slaves from Africa brought the Yoruba gods to the Caribbean and South America . There, African gods were mixed with the saints of Christianity and the symbols of the Catholic Church. Over time, they changed their meaning. Former slaves who migrated back developed a voodoo cult in the country of origin of their families.

The fetish is comparable to the orisha of the Yoruba . A fetish can be God, but also human, plant, animal or material. This depends on the ritual and its situation. In the ritual the parts are activated and strengthened. Fetishes can have been special people.

The white magic is used to call gods and evil spirits to accomplish positive. In black magic , violent gods are invoked. In both cases, the voodoo priest uses magical medicine and utensils.
