Fire cleaning

The fire plaster , which is also called Brünnling , Feurputz , Glowing , Züsler , but most often called Feuermann , is a fiery spook .

Although this demon can come in many forms, it is described as predominantly anthropomorphic . The most common figures are a burning, glowing skeleton, a black man in a pillar of fire, a fiery rider, a burning plowman or a ball of fire (very bright meteor ).

Renward Cysat , a Lucerne historian, is said to have met a fireman and writes about it:

"All there we do on the Kestenboum vnd Langensand dem Seew after estlich dry or 4 of these Züsler, who float from a little Glussen to a Füwrvgiegent and from there to each other, in places and ends where there are no husbands, nor Lüt walking with Liechten at night." Furthermore, he describes the Züsler, as they are called in Switzerland , as a skeleton, which "füwr through the Lyb, through the systems, ribs, eyes, mouth, noses and ears".

The Saxon Chronicle of the World also mentions that the guards of two neighboring castles saw such a fire plaster, which is said to have shone like a torch, as it went from the wall of one castle across one field to the other. This is said to have happened in 1120.

Firemen are souls who have sinned in life and now have to atone for it. So their fiery appearance is their purgatory . The kind of guilt that these souls have taken on themselves can be very different: “Merchants with the wrong measure and weight, deceitful orphan carers, dishonest administrators, forgers, perjurers, violent bailiffs and officials, unjust judges, hard-hearted merchants, field thieves, arsonists , Quarrelsome, thieving bell-ringer, church and crucifixion molesters, manslaughters, suicides and double murderers, unrepentant executed, all followed by a curse in the grave. ”As Freudenthal says. Cysat, on the other hand, names the main sin of taking advantage of one's neighbor by plowing or moving the boundary stone.

Fire plasters try to achieve redemption , which leads to them being friendly towards people and even lighting their way with the glow of the burning body. A simple “God bless you” should be enough to redeem the fire man.
