The Monastery of San Clodio (Sanctus Claudius; San Clodio de Leiro or de Ribadavia) is a former Cistercian abbey in the province of Ourense in Galicia in Spain . It is located around 1 km east of Leiro around 30 km west of Ourense (Orense) in the valley of the Rio Avia, around 10 km north of Ribadavia .
history
The origins of the monastery are said to go back to the 7th century, and it is mentioned in a document in 928. In 1225 it was joined to the Cistercian order as a subsidiary of Melón Monastery from the affiliation of Clairvaux Primary Abbey . In 1536 (according to another source as early as 1530), after a long decline, it joined the Castilian Cistercian Congregation, which led to renewed flourishing. In 1835 it was dissolved by the Mendizábal government . The monastery housed various community facilities. In 1931 the monastery was declared a national monument. Today it is used as a hotel, the church is used by the parish. San Clodio is considered one of the cradles of Ribeiro wine.
Buildings and plant
The three-aisled, four-bay monastery church was built between 1220 and 1250. It has three semicircular apses . The facade of the monastery church with its large rose window is one of the few surviving medieval ones in Galicia. The preserved monastery buildings with two cloisters date back no earlier than the 17th century.
