Ribeiro ( Galician for "shore country") is a Spanish wine-growing region in the north-western region of Galicia and is located near the Portuguese border. Around 2685 hectares of planted vineyards (as of 2005) in flat areas and slopes between 75 and 400  m are located in a triangular area on both sides of the Rio Miño and its tributaries Avia, Arnoia and Barbantiño in the northwest of the province of Ourense .

The wine-growing area is divided into the 13 municipalities of Ribadavia , Arnóia , Castrelo de Miño , Carballeda de Avia , Leiro , Cenlle , Beade , Punxín and Cortegada as well as parts of the municipalities of Boborás , San Amaro , Toén , Carballiño and Ourense .

The wine-growing region is often divided into the subzones Ribeiro de Avia, Ribeiro del Miño and Ribeiro de Arnoia.

The area has had DO status since July 1957. The regulations are generally closely monitored.

A total of 109 bodegas bottle and market the wines of the 5,983 winemakers in the region. Over 90% of the production is intended for the domestic market.

climate

The climate on the Miño is predominantly influenced by the Atlantic. The winters are cold, while the summers are warm, so that the mean annual temperature is quite high of 14.5 ° C. The annual rainfall averages 950 mm. The sun shines about 1915 hours / year. Almost 40% of this amount occurs in July and August alone.

Wines

The area produces mostly white wines . The most important grape varieties are the Trajadura (which is called Treixadura here) and the Torrontés . Other white varieties are Albariño , Albilla , Godello , Loureira , Macabeo and Palomino . Plantings of the Iado variety are in the experimental stage . Overall, the white wines account for almost 90% of the total production volume.

The red wines are mainly made from the Sousón , Brancellao , Caiño , Ferrón and Mencía varieties. In addition, the Garnacha Tinta and Tempranillo grape varieties are also grown.
