Alvarinho ( Portuguese , Galician Albariño ) is a white wine variety that is the most important grape variety for Vinho Verde in Portugal .

Origin, descent

Albariño translates as “the little white one from the Rhine” and it has long been suspected that the grape variety is related to Riesling . According to legend, it was brought to Galicia by monks from Germany or France via the Camino de Santiago between the 11th and 13th centuries . According to more recent findings, Albariño seems to be a relative of the Sauvignon Blanc , Pinot Blanc or Petit Manseng varieties . A definitive clarification of the facts is still pending (as of 2005). A DNA analysis showed a closer relationship to the Portuguese grape variety Malvasia Fina .

distribution

It thrives particularly well in the Monção area , where it is also cultivated as a single variety. The vines are often grown on pergolas . In Portugal the planted area is 1,800 hectares (as of 2010), in Spain it is 4,500 hectares (as of 2010). In Spain , Albariño is the outstanding grape variety in the Rías Baixas growing area in Galicia . Due to the high humidity of the region, the variety is grown exclusively like a pergola on scaffolding around 1.50–2 m high, mostly supported by granite pillars .

Wine

The Albariño is usually drunk young, has a fine acidity and goes very well with fish and seafood.
