Baptism of Fire by Twist ( Russian Крещение поворотом , Kreschtschenije poworotom ) is a short story by the Soviet writer Mikhail Bulgakow , which appeared in 1925 in issues 41 and 42 of the Moscow magazine Medizinski rabotnik . The author added the story to his collection of Young Doctor's Notes .

The first-person narrator, a doctor who graduated from university six months ago, practices alone in the corridor - together with a field scissor and two midwives - in the Nikolska village hospital ( Sychovka district in the Smolensk governorate ). A woman giving birth is brought to him as a dulzewo. " Bank ", the experienced midwife Anna Nikolaevna takes the doctor, the diagnosis, and continues to speak for itself, "turn on your foot." The new doctor, inexperienced in such a case, picks up the taciturn monologue, leaves the delivery room under a flimsy pretext and reads the subject very carefully in his office in Döderlein's "Guide to the obstetric surgery course". Jemine, during the absolutely necessary manual intervention by the obstetrician, a violent uterine rupture must be prevented. The first-person narrator carefully dares to move, turns the fetus courageously and extracts the infant. Its thin, tearful beeping signals: Operation successful.

The narrator closes with a song of praise for the Döderlein - as a doctor one has to read and read again.
