St. Peter unter Spittal is a branch church of the Roman Catholic. Parish Spittal in Spittal an der Drau .

history

A church in St. Peter was first mentioned in documents in 1411. In the course of the Josephine reforms , the church was assigned to the Amlach Curate , which belonged to the Spittal parish. In 1783 St. Peter is referred to as a branch church of Spittal. 

Building

The simple hall church with a low, just closed choir and a southern sacristy annex probably dates from the 18th century. The western facade tower was built in the late 19th century. The single nave nave has a flat roof, the choir has a hollow vault .

Facility

The high altar was built around 1700, the left side altar with the image of Saints Joachim and Anna from the first quarter of the 18th century. A large baroque painting of the Annunciation hangs on the north wall . The picture of Our Lady in a painted frame was painted around 1600. The console figures in the choir were made after 1800.

The Petrus altar, created before 1500, is attributed to the Gajach or Amlach master. The middle panel of this winged altar shows the enthroned Peter . When the wings are open, the apostles Paul and Bartholomäus can be seen, and when the wings are closed, the plague saints Rochus and Sebastian . The altar is now kept in the Spittal rectory.

Funerary monuments

Two Roman stones are walled into the outer wall: a relief of a sacrificing man and an architrave with kantharos and panthers. In front of the church there is a relief with a kantharos and a tree of life . A Roman epitaph can be found in the church. Around the church there were 150 carantanic graves from the 8th / 9th centuries. Uncovered century. This makes St. Peter the most important early medieval burial place in Carinthia.
