The Augsburg finance and main customs office is located on Prinzregentenplatz in the Bahnhofsviertel . After the destruction of the previous building in 1937 during the air raids on Augsburg in February 1944, the tax and main customs office was rebuilt in 1953 and 1954 according to the specifications of the Munich Finance Directorate. It is an important testimony to post-war architecture in Augsburg.

The building consists of two separate structures , which are connected by means of a four-storey intermediate building. The tax office is located in the higher building, the main customs office in the lower one. In the intermediate building there are social rooms and the canteen. The entire structure was designed in such a way that it is perceived as a counterweight to the opposite building block of the former Reichsbahndirektion (now the District Office of Augsburg-Land). It is one of the few examples of National Socialist buildings in Augsburg.

The facade of the intermediate building was painted by Hans Härtel. In 1954 he developed a color concept that was implemented both outside and inside. Issues related to the topic of money were taken up. Another specialty is the paternoster lift in the tax office. It has been in operation since the building was constructed and is the last remaining lift of its kind in Augsburg.
