The Fincha power plants are storage power plants near Fincha in the Oromia region in Ethiopia . Both lie at the upper end of the Finicha'a basin , which belongs to the catchment area of the Abbai , as the Blue Nile is called in Ethiopia. One of the power plants is the Fincha power plant , the other is the FAN power plant (FAN = Fincha Amerti Neshe).

Fincha

Barrier structure and reservoir

The around 340 m long and 20 m high embankment dam dams the widely branched and around 25 km long Lake Chomen at an altitude of 2226 . The volume of the structure is 180,000 m³. An approximately 3.3 km long tunnel and a 1.8 km long pressure tunnel lead the water to the engine house 580 m below. From there it flows 2.4 km in the old river bed to a weir, which directs the water into a 50 km long irrigation canal, via which the remaining water finally flows into the Abbai. If the reservoir is fully blocked, it will hold around 650 million m³ of water.

Fincha power plant

The Fincha power plant has 4 machines with a total installed capacity of 134  MW . The average annual production is 532 million kWh .

The power plant's first 3 Pelton turbines went into operation in November 1974. They each provide a maximum of 33.3 MW. In 2003 another Pelton turbine with an output of 34 MW was put into operation. The maximum height of fall is 590 m.

The total cost of the power plant were 40 million USD . The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) estimated the total cost of the project in April 1969 at $ 33.8 million. The IBRD granted a loan of $ 23.1 million on May 9, 1969.

Fincha Amerti Neshe

Barrier and reservoir

An earth embankment dams the Neshe River , a left tributary of the Fincha , along with the Amerti wetland. Located a little below the Fincha power station, the Amerti-Neshe Reservoir ensures the irrigation of a nearby sugar cane plantation and other fields , which has been expanded by 6000 hectares . The reservoir was flooded in 2010.

FAN power plant

The FAN power plant (Fincha Amerti Neshe power plant) is fed by both the drain from the Fincha power plant and the Amerti-Neshe reservoir. It has an installed capacity of 97 MW. It has 2 machines with a capacity of 48.5 MW each. The power plant, which is 85% financed with a Chinese loan and built by China Gezhouba Group Company (CGGC) , went into operation with the first turbine in September 2007. The second turbine started operating on December 17, 2011.
