The series initially follows the teenage boy Carter, who seems to be leading a perfect life with her single mother. After Carter has to be briefly imprisoned for a failed prank, it is discovered that she was kidnapped as a child by her actual mother, Lori. Carter therefore meets her biological family, consisting of her mother, a police officer who spent years looking for her missing daughter, her father, who successfully published a book about the kidnapping of his daughter, her twin sister Taylor, and her younger brother Grant.
