The males are up to 3.3 cm long, the females up to 6.3 cm long. The colouration of the penguin is yellowish olive-green with a pattern of silver transverse bands, which can be seen most clearly in the rear half of the body. The scales of the side line row have a black border so that a more strongly colored longitudinal line appears along the side of the body. Melanism occurs in some males ; almost black animals with only a few spots of the original color are regularly found.

The swimming area is at the bottom and at medium depths, occasionally at or near the surface. Girardinus microdactylus rivasi was found in a pond on Isla de la Juventud .

Way of life

The animals eat diatoms , algae , detritus and insect larvae. They are sensitive to high chlorine content and warm, cloudy, poorly oxygenated, standing water.
