Girardinus is a genus of the viviparous toothcarps (Poeciliidae). The fish are endemic to Cuba and the largest secondary island, Isla de la Juventud .

features

Girardinus species reach lengths between 2.5 cm and 5 cm (males) and between 4 cm and 9 cm (females). They are small, inconspicuous fish with a yellowish to brownish-olive color. Females grow larger and are paler in color. The fins are transparent in most cases. The male gonopodium is very long. There are no macroscopic features with which the genus can be diagnosed .

Way of life

Girardinus species live in stagnant as well as in weedy calm flowing waters. They feed on invertebrates and vegetable foods.

Systematics

Girardinus is the type genus of the Girardini tribe to which four other types of similarly inconspicuous fish belong: Phallichthys , Phalloptychus , Poeciliopsis and Xenophallus .
