Phalloptychus is a genus of viviparous toothcarps (Poeciliinae). The fish are found in Brazil in coastal fresh waters in Bahia in the north and in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina in the south. In between there is a dissemination gap.

features

Phalloptychus species reach lengths of 2 to 2.5 cm (males) or between 3.5 cm and 4 cm (females). They are inconspicuously colored from olive brown to olive gray and show 7 to 13 thin, blackish transverse bands on the sides of the body. The fins are largely colorless, only with Phalloptychus januarius there are individual specimens whose dorsal fin is patterned with dark dots. The male gonopodium is long, asymmetrical, and hooked along its length. The fin rays , from which the mating organ (gonopodium) is formed, are partially twisted with each other, as the genus name indicates (formed from the Greek phallos "male member", and ptychos / ptyx "fold", or "ptyche" = curvature). The first fin rays of the right and left pelvic fin are different in adult males. They are thick, but the right one is thicker and hardened at the distal end.
