Phallichthys is a genus of the viviparous toothcarps (Poeciliinae). The fish are endemic to Cuba and the largest secondary island, Isla de la Juventud .

features

Phallichthys species reach lengths between 2.5 cm and 5 cm (males) and between 4 cm and 9 cm (females). They are small, inconspicuous fish with a yellowish to brownish-olive color. Females grow larger and are paler in color. The fins are transparent in most cases. There are no macroscopic features with which the genus can be diagnosed .

Way of life

Phallichthys species live in stagnant as well as in weedy calm flowing waters. They feed on invertebrates and vegetable foods.
