The Finzean Bucket Mill is a watermill in the scattered Scottish settlement of Finzean in the Council Area of Aberdeenshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. Furthermore, the mill, together with the Finzean Turning Mill to the east and the Mill of Clinter to the south, form a category A monument ensemble .

history

A water-powered sawmill was built on site in the early 19th century to use the pine forests of Glen Ferrick . This was sold in 1846. After the complete dismantling of the mill buildings, Peter Brown built today's Finzean Bucket Mill in 1853. It was not until the death of the last living descendant in 1974 that operations ceased. After eight years of vacancy, Stan Moyes bought the sawmill and restored it. Although he opened it to visitors in 1990, he still operated the mill commercially at times. In 1991 the Finzean Water Mills Trust took over the management of the facility. The Birse Community Trust has been taking on this task since 1999 .

Since the military had a high demand for the buckets produced during the Second World War , the mill workers were exempt from military service. In 2010 the mill was added to the register of endangered buildings in Scotland. In 2014, however, their condition was classified as good with minimal risk.

description

The Finzean Bucket Mill is located in the very sparsely populated west of Aberdeeshire around nine kilometers southeast of Aboyne on the left bank of the Water of Feugh . Most of the buildings are simple wooden structures with corrugated iron roofs . Only the kiln and the residential building are granite buildings with Harl plaster. The water for operating the medium- sized water wheel is diverted from the Water of Feugh above the mill and fed through a simple wooden channel. The iron wheel with wooden shovels is 3.7 meters in diameter.
