Finzean Turning Mill

The Finzean Turning Mill is a watermill in the scattered Scottish settlement of Finzean in the council area of Aberdeenshire . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. Furthermore, the mill, together with the Finzean Bucket Mill to the west and the Mill of Clinter to the south, form a category A monument ensemble .

history

A water-powered sawmill was built on site in the early 19th century to use the pine forests of Glen Ferrick . In the following decades the mill was operated by various forest tenants. In the 1830s, Alexander Duncan added a mill for turning wood to the mill complex . Although it has been looked after by the Birse Community Trust since 1999 , which had the plant restored, Duncan's descendants still operate the mill today. In 2011 the mill was added to the register of endangered listed buildings in Scotland. In 2014, however, their condition was classified as good with a simultaneous low risk.

description

The Finzean Turning Mill is located in the very sparsely populated west of Aberdeeshire around ten kilometers southeast of Aboyne on the left bank of the Water of Feugh . Most of the buildings are simple wooden structures on granite foundations with corrugated iron roofs . Only the kiln and the residential building are stone buildings made of granite quarries. Above the mill, water is taken from the Water of Feugh and fed to the mills via two channels. The northern Mühlkanal drives the 4.88 meter diameter undershot water wheel of the sawmill, while the southern channel drives a small wheel for the electric generator of the slewing gear as well as the 3.05 meter diameter undershot wheel of the slewing gear. On the eastern edge a two- arch segment arch bridge spans the Water of Feugh. Its supporting structure is made of reddish granite, its deck made of wood.
