Firjan

The Firjan ( Arabic فرجان, DMG Firǧān ; also Firjan ) are an Arab tribe in Libya .

Their main settlement area is west of Ajdabiya , members of the tribe live in many coastal cities in Libya, such as Sirte , Zliten and Tripoli . In the Libyan civil war loyalty played a role in the front to cut off tribes, the continued Libyan National Liberation Army in the capture of Sirte on the support of living there Firdschan opposed to Gaddafi's tribe, the qadhadhfa were disadvantaged. Most of the Firjan people living in Benghazi and Ajdabiya are said to have supported the rebels.

The Firjan are part of a confederation of coastal tribes; other parts of this association are u. a. the tribes of the same name, Zawiya and Misrata . General Khalifa Haftar , who has led a revolt against the Libyan parliament since May 2014 and lived in American exile before the revolution, is a member of the tribe.

In the city of Sirte, the Firjan refused to submit to the Islamic State terrorist militia , which has controlled the city since February 2015. In August 2015, the terrorist militia shot dead a preacher who was a member of the tribe. As a result, mostly young Firjan people rose up against their rule. In revenge, IS killed numerous tribesmen, the data on the death toll vary between 38 and 200. The victims of IS were crucified and beheaded in public in the city. Neither of Libya's two governments came to the aid of the city's anti-ISIS residents.
