The Firestone hydropower plant was the first hydropower plant in the West African Republic of Liberia .
location
The dam and generator system were built in 1942 on the lower reaches of the Farmington River and are located near Harbel in Margibi County , about 50 kilometers east of the capital Monrovia . The power plant was planned as a run-of-river power plant . A dam about 150 m in length and a turbine house were built at the site near Firestone Plantation near Mount Hydo .
Operating history
The power plant has four turbines and generates a total output of 4.8 megawatts. At first it was used exclusively for the construction of the operating facilities and the factory settlement of the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company . The installed technology was imported from the USA. The power plant is still in operation and also provides electricity to neighboring towns. In addition to the hydropower plant, a diesel oil-powered power plant with an output of 3 megawatts was built.
