A Flemish washer , mat or plate is a way of tidying up the excess length of a line on a boat or jetty so that you can walk over it if necessary without stumbling. The English name is Flemish Flake , Flemish Coil or Flemish for short . In addition to the circular shape, there are variants in the shape of an oval or an eight. If you want to process a line completely and permanently into a Flemish disc (upholstery, doormat, trivet), then it must be sewn on the underside, for example with witch stitches .

Often, the laying of washers is not considered good seamanship as the rope dries poorly and dirt can collect in it.

Because of its simple structure, it is rarely mentioned in books on knots . In the Ashley Book of Knots it is numbered 3102 and sewn on 3491.
