The flat intestinal kelp ( Ulva compressa , Syn .: Enteromorpha compressa ) is a green algae species in the genus Ulva .
description
The flat intestinal kelp is an alga with a very variable growth form. The slightly branched thallus is compressed like a tube and gradually widens above a stem-like section. It is constricted in places and is up to 30 cm long and between 1 and 20 mm wide. The cells are almost always disordered.
The name of the intestinal kelp comes from characteristic gas inclusions in the two-layer algae, which cause the intestinal kelp to always stand vertically in the water. As a result, some growth forms look very similar to an intestine.
distribution
The species is particularly widespread in very nutrient- rich waters and is widespread on the coasts of the North and Baltic Seas . It is more rarely found in brackish water. The rapid, rampant multiplication of intestinal kelp at high nutrient salt concentrations also makes it a bio-indicator for the degree of anthropogenisation of a body of water, for example the Weser.
Culture
The plant is used in Japanese cuisine and in the cosmetics industry.
