Flag of Jerusalem
The flag of Jerusalem consists of the framework of the flag of Israel and the coat of arms of the city of Jerusalem inserted in the middle . In the case of Jerusalem, which was captured by the Israeli army in the Six Day War in 1967, there was long discussion about what the city's coat of arms or flag should look like.
description
It was finally decided that the Star of David from the Israel flag had to give way to the " Lion of Judah " ( Bible : Gen 49.9 EU ). Judah, one of the twelve sons of Jacob, is considered to be the progenitor of the biblical David , from the latter the Star of David (מגן דוד - Magen David ) goes back. The symbolized wall in the background represents the Western Wall , the color yellow stands for the Meleke limestone in Jerusalem .
The two blue ribbons were taken from the Israeli national flag , in which they go back to the Jewish prayer clothes ( tallit ).
The writing ירושלים above the coat of arms is the Hebrew name of Jerusalem ( Jeruschalajim ).
Political background and explosiveness
The kinship with the national flag of Israel is intended to justify the Israeli government's claim to the entire city of Jerusalem as the eternal capital. The flag is not recognized by the Palestinian interim government, because it does not accept that East Jerusalem is part of the State of Israel.
