Flag of the Roma

The Roma flag ( O styago le romengo in Romani ) was proclaimed at the First World Romani Congress in London in 1971 as a general symbol of the international Roma ethnic group. The blue in the upper half and the green in the lower half represent heaven and earth. In addition, the Roma flag contains a red chakra , also called a spoke wheel, in the center of the flag. The chakra refers to the Indian origin of the Roma . The Indian flag also contains a chakra.

The symbol is controversial within the subgroups. This is not how the Central Council of German Sinti and Roma uses it. The wheel stands for the idea of a "nomadic" population group. That is a wrong idea, as it is based on z. B. the Central European Roma (Central Council: " Sinti and Roma ") does not apply.
