Montreal flag
The flag of Montreal was first hoisted in May 1939. It shows the basic heraldic symbols of the Montreal coat of arms : a red symmetrical cross on a white field with four floral symbols in the corners and one in the center. The flag has an aspect ratio of 1: 2.
The blue fleur-de-lys of the Bourbons represents the French , the city's first European settlers, and the French- Canadians . The red rose of the House of Lancaster symbolizes the English , the purple thistle the Scottish part of the population. The green shamrock , a three-leaf clover, is the symbol of the Irish part of the population.
A Weymouth pine was added to the center of the flag in September 2017, symbolizing the five tribes of the Iroquois Confederation.
The coat of arms of Canada has a similar symbolism ; the four floral symbols of the original flag also appear here.
