Flat white with latte art

"Flat white" is a name for the preparation variant of a cappuccino , which is usually decorated with latte art . The name came up in Australia and New Zealand in the 1980s. It is usually served in a cappuccino cup and consists of an espresso or ristretto doppio and fine-pored frothed milk. While for the preparation of a cappuccino the milk is mixed with a lot of air when it is heated ("very aereated milk"), the milk with a flat white is only slightly mixed with air ("minimally aereated milk"), so that the consistency of the milk is almost liquid is. In addition, a flat white only has a very thin layer of foam and no “milk foam cap” as is often found on a cappuccino.

In recent years, flat white has also spread in Europe, mainly in large cities. For example, the drink is represented in around 100 London cafés, and since 2010 it has also been on the menu in the branches of the coffee shop chains Starbucks and Costa Coffee in Great Britain. The drink is also spreading in major German cities. In 2018 Nescafé launched the Flat White variety for the Dolce Gusto System for the first time, and Jacobs Douwe Egberts has also been selling the Flat White variety for the Tassimo System since 2019 .
