Graffiti on one of the rocks

Between 1940 and 1969, students repeatedly climbed the third rock of the Flatirons to paint "CU" on the rocks. The "CU" stands for University of Colorado which should be visible to all residents of Boulder.

Students from rival universities, however, changed the letters to "DU" (University of Denver) and "OU" (University of Oklahoma), which ended in a downright competition.

However, the graffito on the rocks was condemned as illegal in the 1970s and the characters were covered in stone colors. On closer inspection, however, the writing is still recognizable.
