Flutterland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Flatterland: like flatland, only more so (German title Flacherland ) is anunofficial continuation of the work Flatland by Edwin Abbott Abbott, written in2001 by Ian Stewart . Wrapped in a story about Vikki, a young triangular woman from Flatland, it deals with some sub-areas of mathematics and physics, in particular the various geometries and definitions of the term dimension .

content

Like Flatland , Flatterland also initially plays in two-dimensional Flatland. The main character is Vikki, a young triangular woman who lives in a house with her family, father, mother and younger brother. The caste system , which was still so strict in Flatland , based on the symmetry of a polygon and the number of sides, has been significantly defused in Flatterland, especially since it takes place in a modern era. Vikki is the great-great-granddaughter of the main character Albert Square from Flatland (that's what Stewart calls him) and one day finds his diary in the attic, whereupon she decides to make contact with a three-dimensional being. She creates this too and thus gets to know Space Hopper, a being whose shape is reminiscent of a bouncy ball and who can take the other with him on a journey between the most varied of universes. Vikki accompanies him and gets to know many areas of mathematics and physics on living objects.

Reviews

Flatterland received positive reviews from several American mathematicians' associations.

In his review, James Howard criticizes Flatterland for lacking the social criticism and satire of Flatland and for concentrating instead on the mathematical-physical component. Nevertheless, it is not a mistake to read the book, especially as a supplement to a mathematics degree.

Flatterland was the recommendation of the month of the Central and State Library Berlin in August 2005.
