The Flattnitzbach high moor to the north

The Flattnitzbach high moor is a high moor in the Gurktal Alps a few kilometers north of the village of Flattnitz .

The moor is located at 1350 m above sea level in a valley floor near the border between Carinthia and Styria. The Flattnitzbach flows through the valley. The raised bog is around 2.5 hectares in size and covered with pines. It consists of two plant communities : the areas free of mountain pines are populated by the Rote Hochmoor-Bultgesellschaft, the other is the peat moss-pine moor. Both are remnants of late Ice Age vegetation that has lingered on peaty, acidic, wet soils.

The dwarf birch ( Betula nana ) grows in the undergrowth of mountain pines throughout the moor , an ice age relic that inhabits the deepest location within the Gurktal Alps. Other typical bog species, in addition to peat moss , the peat-colored hair cap moss , the rosemary , bog berry , bilberry , Schei Diges cotton grass , Sundew . The little-flowered sedge ( Carex pauciflora ) grows in the gullies

All around the raised bog there are flat bogs, pastures and spruce forests.

The Flattnitzbach-Hochmoor is the center of the nature reserve of the same name , which has existed since 1972 (LGBl. No. 29/1972, 9/1989) and covers 43.1 hectares, all of which are located in the municipality of Glödnitz .
