Flavius Stephanus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

(Flavius) Stephanus († September 18, 96 in Rome ) was one of the murderers of the Roman emperor Domitian .

Stephen was a freedman. He was the procurator of Flavia Domitilla , the wife of Titus Flavius Clemens , who was consul in 95 . Stephen played a key role in the murder of Domitian. Days before the crime he had faked an arm injury in order to hide a dagger in a bandage, which he smuggled into the Emperor's bedroom without being noticed. Although he had the element of surprise on his side and was said to have outstanding physical strength, he initially did not succeed in overpowering Domitian; he is said to have thrown himself at his attacker and, despite his wounds inflicted on him, wrestled with Stephen for a long time. Only the accomplices Parthenius and Maximus were able to complete the attack and murder Domitian. The conspirators were caught and killed by the emperor's guard on site.
