The American company Fleer was a manufacturer of confectionery , mainly chewing gum, and trading cards .

history

In 1849 the German Otto Holstein founded a factory for the production of flavors in Philadelphia . In the 1880s, Frank H. Fleer joined the company and took over management; The production of chewing gum began around 1885. In 1928 the Fleer Chewing Gum Company in Philadelphia composed an elastic chewing mass that enabled the formation of large chewing gum bubbles. This feature helped the new product quickly spread around the world under the brand name Dubble Bubble . In Germany, Dubble Bubble was imported and distributed by the Süport company in Viernheim .

From 1923, Fleer also produced trading cards. Sports collector cards from the areas of baseball , football , basketball and ice hockey were particularly popular . At times Fleer was considered one of the three largest trading card manufacturers.

In 2005 the company declared bankruptcy. The naming rights were acquired from Upper Deck in July of that year for $ 6.1 million .
