Fleur Lombard (born 1974 in Watford , United Kingdom ; died 4 February 1996 in Staple Hill , United Kingdom) was the first peacetime firefighter in Great Britain to die .

Live and act

Fleur Lombard was born in Watford, United Kingdom in 1974 to Roger and Jane Lombard. Against the resistance of her mother, she decided to go to the fire service and in 1994, as the best of her class, completed her training as a firefighter. For this she received the Silver Ax Award . Besides her, there were only seven other women among the approximately 700 members of the Avon Fire and Rescue Service .

On February 4, 1996, Fleur called the unit to a fire in a supermarket. The supermarket security guard had placed this on purpose. Together with her partner Robert Seaman, Fleur was sent into the burning building to search for other people and to fight the fire. Both were surprised by a flashover and tried to withdraw from the supermarket. While Seaman managed to escape, Fleur Lombard died a few meters from the escape exit, trapped by falling parts of the building.

Fleur was posthumously awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal for bravery. Her partner Robert Seaman received the George Medal for returning to the burning building without hesitation after noticing that Fleur hadn't made it out. The firefighter who supported him, Pat Foley, received the Queen's Commendation for Bravery .

She was buried in the graveyard of St. Enodoc's Church in Cornwall .

legacy

To honor her, the Avon Fire and Rescue Service created the " Fleur Lombard Bursary " ("Fleur Lombard Stipedium"). It is intended to help young firefighters with their training. Fire fighters in Avon still remember Fleur Lombard every year.

A memorial plaque was placed near the place where she died. Her name is on the National Firefighters Memorial at St. Paul's Cathedral in London.
