history
In the 18th century, the first attempts were made to establish a library in Middleton. Reverend Elias Smith donated the first social library from his private fortune in 1772. A library association with 46 members led by Dr. ES Phelps was founded in 1838, but soon disbanded. John M. Peabody founded a new library association in 1865. Charles L. Flint, a resident of Middleton and first secretary of the Massachusetts Agriculture Committee, proposed that the city work with the Peabody Association in 1879 to build a public library for the city's 150th anniversary. Flint agreed to donate $ 1,000 if the City of Middleton raised the remaining estimated cost of $ 400. The first public library was then opened in the city's old town hall.
Charles L. Flint died in 1889, leaving the City of Middleton $ 10,000 for the construction of a new library building. The city then had the current building constructed by local architects and builders. Other Middleton residents participated in the financing and implementation of the project. On November 11, 1891, the Flint Public Library was opened. The book inventory of around 5000 copies came about by amalgamating the previous book collections.
present
In 2006 the library building was extensively renovated and expanded. Today the Flint Public Library holds over 60,000 books, 3,500 DVDs and 2,000 audio books. Library users also have access to more than 65,000 e-books and online videos.
