St. Florian

The Florianitag on May 4 is the feast of St. Florian . It is especially celebrated by the fire brigades in Austria (with the exception of Vorarlberg ). Since May 4th is not a public holiday , but does not always fall on a Sunday, it is held on the Sunday before or after May 4th .

Although the veneration of Saint Florian goes back to the founding times of the fire brigades , Floriani Day has only been celebrated on a larger scale since the Second World War .

The holiday is celebrated both at the local level and at higher levels. Mostly it is used to present oneself in public. In the individual fire brigades, the day usually begins with a holy mass and then an open day with various demonstrations. The customs in connection with this day can be very different from region to region. In some cases, firefighters are sworn in or honored in public. At some fire brigades, so-called Floriani walkways are held.

Austrian-German cross-border Florian celebrations, which are held alternately in Großgmain and Bayerisch Gmain , have an almost one hundred year tradition .

Various types of celebrations are also held at the state level. In Lower Austria, for example, a Floriani march has been held annually to different locations since 1983 .
