The Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge is a protected area of the United States . It is located in southeast Florida in the Everglades area and is primarily used to protect the Florida puma , also known as the Florida panther. In addition to this, 24 other endangered animal species live in the area. These include the Florida black bear, the Mississippi alligator , the black -tailed crane and the indigo snake. The white-tailed deer is also worth mentioning as an important prey of the puma . The vegetation is dominated by pine forests , cypress swamps , wet meadows and lakes. The sanctuary is administered by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service .
