Flying ball

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Flugball is a term used in table tennis . One speaks of a flying ball when a player hits the ball above the table in play, if it has not touched his own playing field since it was last hit by the opponent. This is counted as an error to the acceptor.

Before 1993, it was also considered a flying ball when the player accepted the ball behind the table with the bat . In 1993 the world association ITTF changed this regulation at the congress in Gothenburg. Now it only counted as a flying ball if the ball was stopped in its own playing field before it hit the table. The table surface and the area next to your own table half count as "own playing field".

A special case exists when an opponent's service is accepted, whereby the ball touches the net but not the own half of the table (net service). If the ball is accepted over the table, it counts as a net service and the opponent repeats the service. If the ball is accepted behind the table, it is considered a miss serve, i.e. a mistake by the opponent.
