The Aitutaki Airport is the only airport of the Cook Islands belonging island Aitutaki .
It is located five kilometers outside the largest settlement, Arutanga.
history
The first airstrip on Aitutaki was built by the US military during World War II. This consisted of coral rock. From 1951 to 1960, the Aitutakis lagoon was used as a stopover between Samoa and Tahiti by TEAL (Tasman Empire Airways Limited) flying boats . The lagoon served as a refueling stop on the coral route .
In 2003 the airport was rebuilt. It received a new runway, which was partly built on the previous coral runway. Thanks to the conversion, aircraft up to the size of a Boeing 737 can land at the airport today . The terminal was also renewed.
In the meantime, the runway has also been equipped with lighting so that the airport can also be approached at night.
