The Rarotonga International Airport is the only international airport of the Cook Islands and the basis of the local airline Air Rarotonga .

It is located three kilometers outside the capital Avarua on the main island of Rarotonga .

history

The airport was inaugurated in 1974 during a visit by Queen Elizabeth II .

In 2009, the renovation and expansion of the existing handling facilities began. The redesigned terminal was officially opened on June 22, 2010.

Due to the long runway (2300 m), the use of large commercial aircraft, e.g. B. Airbus A320 , Boeing 777 or Boeing 747 possible. As of January 2017, Air New Zealand is also flying to Los Angeles via Rarotonga once a week with a Boeing 777-200ER .
