The Erebuni Airport ( Armenian Էրեբունի օդանավակայան ) is a civilian and military airport in the Armenian capital Yerevan .

use

The airport is currently used primarily for military purposes and is a base for the Russian air force . Mainly MiG-29 combat aircraft and Mil Mi-24 combat helicopters are stationed there . The airport is used civilly by Armenian airlines such as Ararat International Airlines for charter flights within Armenia and to the CIS countries . The airline Taron Avia , which ceased operations in 2019, was also based at Erebuni Airport. Charter flights with helicopters are also possible.

location

The airport is located around seven kilometers south of Yerevan at the end of Arshakuniats Avenue and only a few kilometers southeast of the city's new Zvartnots International Airport .

history

The airport was built in 1938 by architects L. Sh. Khristaforyan and RG Asratyan as well as the construction engineers EN Tosunyan and IG Baghramyan as an airport for Yerevan. With the opening of Yerevan Airport in 1981, Erebuni lost its importance.

The airport has served as a Russian military base since 1995. In November 2013 the airport was expanded to accommodate the Russian air force. In January 2014, Russia's Southern Military District released a notice that several Mi-24P and Mil Mi-8 would be relocated during the year , but this was delayed until the end of 2015.

Incidents

On November 4, 2008, an Armenian Air Force Mi-24 helicopter crashed during a training flight. A pilot was killed.
