The Fua'amotu International Airport ( IATA code : TBU , ICAO code : NFTF ) is the largest international airport in the island nation of Tonga . It is located about 15 km south-southeast of the capital Nukuʻalofa .

It is the base of Real Tonga Airlines . It is also served by regional airlines from Apia , Sydney and Auckland .

The airport terminal was built in 1991 with Japanese aid. The airport is closed on Sundays. Exceptions are emergencies or flights with the prior approval of the airport operator.
