The Mangalore airport is the airport of the Indian city of Mangalore and the second largest airport in the Indian state of Karnataka .

The airport is located near Bajpe, north of Mangalore on a high plateau that slopes sharply on all sides, and is therefore considered to be difficult to fly into. The airport was opened in 1951 with a 1.6 km long runway. In order to enable larger aircraft to approach this airport (the runway 09/27 is only permitted for aircraft up to the size of a Boeing 737-400) and thus to enable international flight connections, a new, 2.5 km long runway was opened in 2006 . Since then there have been numerous flight connections, especially to the Arab region.

In 2010, the old terminal from when the airport was opened was replaced by a new, modern terminal, which is a little better developed from the city.

Incidents

  • On August 19, 1981, a set Hindustan Aeronautics HAL 748 of Indian Airlines ( air vehicle registration VT-DXF ) in adverse weather conditions during the landing at the airport Mangalore only in the middle of the runway at excess speed. When rolling over the end of the runway, the nose landing gear broke off; the plane slid down into a valley and was irreparably damaged on the rocky terrain. All 26 inmates survived, but 7 suffered minor injuries.
