Air India Express ( Hindi एयर इंडिया एक्सप्रेस ) is an Indian low-cost airline , known as Air India Charters Limited until 2005 , based in Mumbai and based at Mumbai Airport . It is a subsidiary of Air India .

history

Air India Express was founded in March 2005 as a subsidiary of the state-owned Indian Air India. On November 30, 2006, she received her first new Boeing 737-800 . With an Air Operator's Certificate independent of the parent company , Air India Express flies the low-priced routes between southern India and the United Arab Emirates . The target group are primarily Indian workers who fly from home to their workplace and back to India on vacation.

At the beginning of October 2005, the route network was extended to Delhi , Mumbai and Singapore airports . The airline stands out with its colorful and detailed paintwork on the tail fin with motifs from Indian culture.

Destinations

Air India Express flies from Mumbai to destinations in India as well as international destinations in Southeast Asia and the Arabian Peninsula .

Incidents

  • On May 22, 2010, an Air India Express Boeing 737-800 ( aircraft registration number VT-AXV ) coming from Dubai shot over the runway at Mangalore Airport when landing. 158 people died in the accident. At this point in time it was the accident of a Boeing 737 with the most fatalities (see also Air India Express flight 812 ) .
  • On May 26, 2010, a young co-pilot dropped a Boeing 737-800 on its flight from Dubai to Pune 2,000 meters when he tried to adjust his seat and accidentally hit the steering column. The flight captain, who was initially in the toilet, was finally able to intercept the machine. No one was injured in the incident, and panic broke out among the passengers at the steep dive.
  • On August 7, 2020 at around 7.40 p.m. local time, a Boeing 737-800 (VT-AXH) coming from Dubai rolled over the end of the runway at Calicut International Airport in Kozhikode. Due to heavy rain, the machine slid down a slope at the end of the runway and broke in two. There were 190 people on board; there were at least 18 dead and numerous injured occupants (see also Air India Express flight 1344 ) .
