Kingfisher Red was founded in 2003 under the name Air Deccan as India's first low-cost airline and started its flights in August of the same year with regular scheduled flights from Bangalore to Mangalore and Hubli . There was almost an accident on the company's first flight. On the morning of September 24, 2003, an ATR 42 engine caught fire shortly before take-off, but the fire brigade was able to extinguish it quickly . There were many prominent guests on board, such as the Prime Minister of Andhra Pradesh , Chandrababu Naidu, and the Minister of Civil Aviation, Rajiv Pratap Rudy. The cause of the fire was apparently condensation in the engines; The technical condition of the first six ATR 42s had already been criticized in the weeks before the maiden flight. In September the airline opened a hub in Chennai . Air Deccan was the first private Indian airline to add Airbus aircraft to its fleet when five A320s were leased in July 2004 . These are serviced by Lufthansa Technik ; this was settled at the end of September 2006.

Air Deccan showed a very high growth rate from the start. Despite the maiden flight, which almost ended in a disaster due to a fire on board (see accidents / incidents), the number of destinations, the number of passengers and the fleet continued to grow. The expanding Indian economy and the increasing number of middle-income earners in the society also benefited the expansion.

Takeover by Kingfisher

In July 2007 Air Deccan announced that Kingfisher Airlines ' parent company , United Brewery Group , had acquired a 26% stake in the company. For this reason, a new corporate identity was introduced in October 2007 , which is similar to the Kingfisher brand identity. At the same time it was decided to change the name to Simplifly Deccan . Simplifly Deccan is to function exclusively as a low-cost airline in the future .

In the summer of 2008 the company was renamed again and has since operated under the current name of Kingfisher Red and the callsigns and codes of the parent company Kingfisher Airlines.

In September 2011 it was announced that Kingfisher Red would be liquidated as the parent company wanted to move away from the low-cost airline segment . This finally happened by mid-2012.

fleet

Kingfisher Red recently no longer operated any aircraft itself, the routes were flown with aircraft from the fleet of the parent company Kingfisher Airlines .

Trivia

  • The airline's mascot, the "Common Man" , was created by the Indian author and cartoonist RK Laxman . For almost fifty years the Common Man has stood for the hopes, ambitions, difficulties and perhaps also weaknesses of a person from India; so he represents the average inhabitant of India. Due to its high level of awareness through the daily cartoon series in the Times of India , Air Deccan chose the Common Man as its mascot, because it is precisely this target group that they want to serve with flights.
