SpiceJet , originally Royal Airways , is a low-cost Indian airline based in New Delhi and based at Indira Gandhi International Airport .
history
The origins of SpiceJet can be found in Genius Leasing Finance and Investment Company , which was founded on February 9, 1984 by the Indian Modi Group and which started offering air taxi flights on March 14, 1984 . After the deregulation of Indian air traffic, the company became MG Express Ltd. in 1993 . Renamed to take up national scheduled flights in cooperation with Lufthansa . For this purpose, MG Express leased four Boeing 737-200s from the German company, which were used under the ModiLuft brand . Lufthansa also provided technical and organizational support on site until the collaboration ended in 1995. In the following year, ModiLuft Ltd. company renamed its flight operations, but was not dissolved afterwards.
In 2000, the resumption of flight operations was planned using the still existing Air Operator Certificate from ModiLuft . The scheduled flights were to be operated under the new Royal Airways brand , but could not be started due to insufficient funding. After the financial problems were resolved in 2003 by an IPO , the company was restructured and in 2004 became Royal Airways Ltd. renamed. The entrepreneurs Ajay Singh and Bhupendra Kansagra bought the company in early 2005 and converted it into a low-cost airline before flight operations began . The first scheduled flight took place on May 24, 2005 under the SpiceJet brand . A year later, the company's official name also became SpiceJet Ltd. changed.
In November 2014, it was revealed that SpiceJet was experiencing economic problems and its very existence was in jeopardy. Several aircraft have been returned to the leasing company since the beginning of the year. In mid-December 2014 the situation worsened as flights were canceled due to a lack of fuel.
At the beginning of 2015, Ajay Singh, who had since resigned, took over the majority again and provided the airline with new capital of 209 million euros . With the sale of the 15 De Havilland DHC-8-400s , the fleet will in future only consist of Boeing 737s and thus concentrate on the big cities of India.
