Lists of aviation accidents

Air India Express flight 1344 (flight number IATA : IX1344 , ICAO : AXB1344 , radio call sign: EXPRESS INDIA 1344 ) was an international scheduled flight operated by the Indian low-cost airline Air India Express from Dubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates to Calicut International Airport in India. On August 7, 2020, the Boeing 737-8HG (WL) rolled over the runway end of the destination airport at high speed when landing . In the aviation accident at least 21 people were killed, including both pilots and four young children. 169 people survived the accident.

It was the airline's second serious aviation accident: In 2010, an identical Air India Express plane at Mangalore Airport on Air India Express flight 812 also fell down a steep slope behind the runway, killing 158 people.

plane

The aircraft involved in the accident is a Boeing 737-8HG (WL) with serial number 36323 and model serial number 2108 . The machine's maiden flight took place on November 15, 2006, followed by delivery to Air India Express on November 30, 2006, which has since been the only operator to fly the machine. The twin-engine medium-range narrow-body aircraft with the air vehicle registration VT-AXH was with two turbofan -Triebwerken type CFM56-7B27 and winglets and a special livery India Gate / Gateway of India appointed.

Inmates

The flight from Dubai to Kozhikode took 184 passengers, including 10 small children. There was also a six-person crew on board. It consisted of the flight captain, the first officer and four flight attendants. Due to the rampant COVID-19 pandemic, an above-average number of Indian guest workers who were stranded in Dubai and were to be brought back to their homeland on behalf of the Indian government were transported on the international scheduled flight .

Course of events

The machine took off at 10:15 a.m. UTC in Dubai for the flight to Kozhikode. At 13:42 UTC (19:12 local time), the first approach to runway 28 of Calicut International Airport was canceled due to a strong tailwind. Due to the heavy rain during the monsoon season , visibility was limited to only 2000 m. The aircraft then had an accident at 2:11 p.m. UTC (7:41 p.m. local time) during another attempted landing on runway 10 of this airport - i.e. the same runway, in the opposite direction and the only runway at this airport located on a flattened hill. After touching down on the runway late about 100 m behind the end of the recommended landing zone , the aircraft did not come to a standstill in time, but rolled at high speed over the end of the runway and almost 10 m down a slope. In the subsequent impact, the bow section tore away from the rest of the fuselage and broke through a boundary wall on the final impact. Unlike the 2010 incident, there was no fire after the impact. The landing took place with a tailwind component of 12 knots, which was above the maximum permissible value.

Victim

At least 21 people were killed in the accident, including the two pilots and four small children between the ages of 1 and 5. The injured were taken to hospitals in Kozhikode and Malappuram in over 100 ambulances; 127 passengers were still receiving treatment there the day after the accident. By August 22nd, two other passengers died from their injuries. This increased the death toll to 20.

On August 8, 2020, Air India Express announced the payment of provisional compensation to the relatives of the accident victims and injured. The amount is ₹ 1,000,000 (equivalent to approximately € 13,000) for the deceased who are older than 12 years, ₹ 500,000 (equivalent to approximately € 6,500) for the younger deceased, ₹ 200,000 (equivalent to approximately € 2,600) for the seriously injured and ₹ 50,000 (corresponds to about 650 €) for passengers who have suffered minor injuries.

examination

The Indian Directorate-General for Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Indian Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) were tasked with investigating the incident. The flight recorders were recovered the day after the accident.
