Weather conditions

At the time of the accident, there were light thunderstorms and winds from the west-northwest at 22 knots with gusts of up to 37 knots. The visibility was about seven kilometers, the temperature was about 11 ° C.

the accident

Pegasus Airlines flight 2193 was scheduled to take off from Izmir at 4:40 p.m. local time and land at Istanbul-Sabiha Gökçen Airport at 5:45 p.m. However, the departure was delayed because the plane had already arrived too late in Izmir. At around 5:13 p.m., the aircraft was finally pushed back from the gate and rolled to runway 16L, from which it took off at 5:23 p.m. with a delay of almost 45 minutes. The flight was initially without unusual occurrences. The approach to landing on runway 06 of Istanbul-Sabiha Gökçen Airport began at 1743 . Flight 2193 was the last flight to land on runway 06 before changing the landing direction due to the wind.

During the approach was informed the crew about the current wind situation and the fact that the pilots of the two machines would end up in front of them, durchgestartet were. The maximum permissible tailwind component for the Boeing 737 is 10 knots (20 km / h). However, the pilots landed with a tail wind of 19 knots, with gusts of 31 knots. They also landed on a wet runway, which further extended the landing distance required. At 18:19, the aircraft touched down on runway 06, but did not come to a stop in time and shot over the runway end at a speed of around 63 knots (115 km / h). Shortly thereafter, it collided with an antenna of the instrument landing system , fell down a small slope and collided with the airport wall. As a result, it broke into three parts and came to a halt just before an expressway outside the airport.

The Mode-S data of the machine's transponder shows that the machine only touched down after about 1950 m of the 3000 m long runway at a speed of about 130 knots (220 km / h). The remaining runway length of around 1000 m was no longer sufficient to safely brake the machine.

The airport was initially closed after the accident and other flights were diverted to Istanbul Airport.

Victim

Three passengers died in the accident. All 180 surviving inmates were taken to hospitals, of which 179 were still in treatment the day after the accident, three of them in intensive care units.
