history
The airport originally opened in 1962 during the Soviet era. At that time the facilities were still very modest. At the end of the 1970s it was decided to expand the airfield, so in 1980 a new runway system was put into operation. In 1981 a VIP hall was inaugurated. In 1987 a passenger building was handed over to its intended use.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union , the airport was transferred to Uzbekistan. After a few uneventful and rather quiet years for the airport, the terminal was renovated in 2006 and a new instrument landing system (ILS) was installed. In 2007 the opening of a new control tower followed, as well as the first flights with Moskovia Airlines to Moscow, which flew as the first private airline and to Uzbekistan Airways to Navoiy. In 2008, in connection with the expansion measures, the runway was extended and a new fire station and a vehicle parking space for airport vehicles went into operation. In the same year, on August 27, 2008, the first freighter landed by Korean Air Cargo , which was planning to set up a hub for traffic to Europe. She therefore took over the management of the airport on January 1, 2010, which was also receiving new freight facilities. Korean Air Cargo's first regular operations began this year, with Uzbekistan Airlines now also carrying out cargo services to Navoiy. The new cargo building was finally opened in 2010. In the meantime, the airport has developed into the freight hub for Korean Air Cargo to Europe, which lets the cargo aircraft make a stopover here to refill fuel, among other things.
traffic
Today the airport is connected internationally (as of May 2012) in passenger service with Moscow, in addition, Uzbekistan Airways also operates domestic flights from Navoiy. In freight traffic, Korean Air Cargo serves various destinations in Europe in addition to its base in Seoul with a stopover in Navoiy with Boeing 747s . The freight department of the flag carrier Uzbekistan Airways also offers freighter services with Airbus A300-600 from Navoiy .
